Academy of St. Martin
in the Fields
Chamber Ensemble

October 22, 2008, 7:30pm

In 1959, 11 enthusiastic musicians formed an orchestra whose aim was to perform without a conductor. Thus was born The Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, the beginning of a remarkable history that now boasts well over 500 albums, making it the most recorded chamber orchestra in the world. The Academy of St. Martin in the Fields Chamber Ensemble was created in 1967 to perform larger chamber works. Drawn from the principal players of the orchestra, the Ensemble receives accolades everywhere it tours, such as a recent New York Times review, calling theirs “a bristling performance.” Their program consists of Dvorak's String Sextet in A-Major, Op. 48, Kenneth Leighton's Fantasy Octet, OP. 87 and Mendelssohn's Octet for strings in E-flat Major, Op. 20.
