The Education Outreach Program
We invite low-income, at-risk, and special needs
students who are participating in local educational programs with
non-profit organizations to attend professional performing arts at
Popejoy.
Not only are they exposed to the arts, but they also learn social and group behaviors and form a community around these shared experiences. For most, including the chaperones, it is their first experience with live performance and being in a theater. It is also their introduction to the University of New Mexico campus and the myriad of opportunities available through UNM.
Groups who have participated in the program are:
- Very Special Arts New Mexico
- The Ranches
- Youth Development Inc. / Mentoring Initiative
- Big Brothers Big Sisters
- Working Classroom
- Children’s Court (Special Programs) Bernalillo County
- Juvenile Drug Court in Sandoval County
- Youth Building Better Lives
- Casa Angelica
- Delancey Street Foundation
- Boys and Girls Clubs of New Mexico
- Albuquerque Health Care for the Homeless (Tierra del Sol)
- Upward Bound
- Almas de Amistad
- NMHU School of Social Work's Community Clinical Treatment Program
- Warehouse 508
Additional Community Outreach:
- We provide free master classes with touring artists to UNM students.
- We bring teaching artists from Popejoy Presents shows out of the theater and into the classroom.
- We provide educational visits to Popejoy Hall including tours backstage with demonstrations of our technical equipment.
- We collaborate with other organizations and UNM departments in support of their projects and the Albuquerque arts community.
